Most people don’t clean out their gutters nearly as much as they should. While professionals say it’s best to clean out gutters twice a year in the spring and fall seasons, some people may neglect their gutters for years at a time. We understand that. After all, people are busy, and like many things, gutters are largely out of sight, out of mind.
Even though cleaning out your gutters may be an inconvenient task to add to your to-do list, it’s important to get it done, whether you pay someone else to do it or take care of it yourself with the proper safety precautions. Here are a few reasons why cleaning out your clogged gutters is so important:
- Avoid water damage- Gutters are integral to proper drainage. When they are clogged, water on your roof cannot drain properly, which can cause rotting, mold, and other damage to your roof. In addition, debris that gets stuck in your gutters may cause water to spill over the sides of the gutters and harm your home’s exterior. Worst of all, if the water can’t be redirected away from your home via your gutters, it may pool around the base of your home and cause expensive damage to your foundation.
- Prevent pests- Leaves, moss, and debris in your gutters provide ample cover for pests, which will attract them to your home and perhaps encourage them to find ways inside. Also, debris often causes standing water in your gutters, which is a breeding ground for mosquitos. To prevent pests from bugging you, make sure to clean your gutters regularly.
- Improve appearance- Unkept gutters can make your home’s exterior look messy and unappealing. The clogs can also weigh down your gutters and make them sag, which also isn’t a good look. By cleaning out your gutters, you’re doing a favor for your curb appeal.
